Global Money Week, 2018

On 12 March 2018, at the premises of the Bank of Albania, the Money Week (MW) was launched. This year’s theme was “Money matters matter”. The Bank of Albania participated for the fifth time in the MW celebrations, and in cooperation with the Albanian Association of Banks, with the support of the Ministry of Education and Sports, and the Deposit Insurance Agency (DIA), organized a series of educational and awareness-raising activities such as school competitions, lectures, visits to the Museum of the Bank of Albania and commercial banks, involving directly around 5000 children and young people, representing 55 secondary schools, 14 high schools, 8 universities, in 14 different cities.

Global Money Week 2018 Activities 

The Launching Ceremony of the Money Week was organized at the Museum of the Bank of Albania (BoA). The Governor of the Bank of Albania and the Chairman of the Albanian Association of Banks (AAB) in their brief welcoming address emphasized, among other things, the Money Week mission, promoting the importance of financial literacy to the general public and especially to the younger generations.

In this ceremony, prizes were awarded to the winners of the three competitions launched a month earlier by BoA and AAB by Governor Sejko and AAB Chairman Pedrazzi, together with the CEOs of commercial banks that sponsored the prizes for the winners of the respective contests.

This contest targeted sixth graders, who presented creative projects, like drawing and installations, which clearly transmit their concept of money management. Overall, 70 projects were presented by 144 pupils of 21 secondary schools.

The best video contest invited high school students to present their messages on “Money matters matter” through a video no longer than 2 minutes. The video could be produced by an individual or a team. In total, 24 videos were presented by 40 students from 14 high schools in Albania, of which 3 winners were announced.

The third contest was for the best essay on "Does the use of the euro in the commercial transactions in Albania pose a risk?". University students were invited to write argumentative essays no longer than 1500 words, conform to academic writing criteria.

On 13 March 2018, 6th graders of “Jeronim De Rada” secondary school visited the Museum of the Bank of Albania who also attended a presentationon the “Money matters matter”.

Also, "Besnik Sykja" high school students visited ProCredit Bank’s 24/7 corner in its Tirana e Re branch. The students were specifically introduced to the innovative banking services offered 24/7 and learned about the advantages of the banking services automation for bank customers.

Meanwhile, Union Bank welcomed a number of schoolchildren with a view to educating the younger generation about the basic principles of banking and savings. The children visited the central branch of the Bank, and heard about the basic procedures, as well as the Bank's main products and services.

At Epoka University in Tirana, Ms. Olta Manjani, a senior economist at the Monetary Policy Department at the Bank of Albania, delivered a lecture on “Monetary system and the role of the Bank of Albania in preserving it”, and Ms. Suela Totokoci, Head of Treasury Department at Intesa Sanpaolo Bank, delivered a lecture on “The role of banks in transmitting the monetary policy and the use of national currency”.

On 13 March 2018, at the Bank of Albania, in the context of the Nights of the Museum" activities, a lecture was held on the "Importance of financial literacy for young entrepreneurs and personal well-being" by Mr. Dritan Mezini, General Director of DM Consulting and the Duapunë.com portal. In his lecture, Mr Mezini addressed an audience of young students and entrepreneurs to raise the awareness on the importance of financial literacy as part of their overall training and the key to entrepreneurial success.

At the premises of the Regional Youth Center of Tirana, with the participation of high school students, an open class was held under the title "Think for Tomorrow". Ms. Najada Uncle, Head of the Payments Department at Tirana Bank and Chairwoman of the Payments System Committee at AAB, held a lecture on "Financial literacy on personal income". Ms. Gentiana Duka, Head of the Personal and Consumer Loan Unit, Alpha Bank Albania, held a lecture on "Soft Loans for Students".

On the occasion of the Money Week, one of the activities organized was a contest with projects for 6th graders entitled "Money matters matter". On this occasion, a temporary exhibit was organized with projects of students participating in this contest. Students were invited together with their teachers and parents to a ceremony in which certificates of participation were handed out.

At "Aleksandër Xhuvani" University, in Elbasan, an open lecture was held by Ms. Juna Bozdo, Head of Systemic Assessment Division, at the Financial Stability Department of the Bank of Albania, on "Financial Stability, Bank of Albania's Role in its preservation and the deeuroization". Ms. Artiola Agalliu, Head of the Risk Management Department, at Union Bank, delivered a lecture on "Financial Stability and the role of banks ". Ms Marilda Shkurti from the Deposit Insurance Agency (DIA), delivered a lecture on "Financial Stability, the role of deposit insurance schemes in safeguarding financial stability".

At the Aleksandër Moisiu University, in Durrës, an open lecture was held by Ms. Ela Golemi, Member of the Supervisory Council of the Bank of Albania and Vice-Dean at the Faculty of Business Research at Aleksandër Moisiu University, in Durrës, on "The importance of using our national currency in the sustainable economic development of the country". Another lecture was deliveredby Ms. Joarda Mema, Head of Segment Development and Product Development at Credins Bank, on "Retail Banking Activity: Providing Loans and Deposits in Local Currency".

 

At the European University of Tirana an open lecture was held by Ms. Ediola Biçaku, Head of the Internal Audit Department at Intesa Sanpaolo Bank Albania, on "Internal Audit in Banking Sector & Future Challenges".

At Protik Innovation Center, an open lecture was held by Ms. Linda Shomo, CEO & founder of EasyPay, on "Electronic Money and Payments in 2020". The lecture was addressed to Tirana high school students and students from various universities in the country and was followed by a short quiz that tested the financial knowledge of young people.

A version of the on-line game of International Trade was organized by Junior Achievement at Protik conference room with the participation of 30 students (17-18 years old) from Tirana. The students were divided into teams of five acting as a special "place". Countries classified by income level (high, middle and low) competed with each other to "produce" paper forms (circular, triangular, rectangular, etc.) for the purpose of selling them to a trader who operates in the international market, with prices varying on demand and supply. The winning team was declared based on the collected earnings.
