Fourth Conference of the Museum of the Bank of Albania

“The Middle Ages: the precursor to a well-organised monetary system”

The Bank of Albania has the pleasure of announcing its fourth Conference of the Museum of the Bank of Albania,  that will be held on 8 February 2023, in Tirana, at the Bank of Albania.

The one-day conference will be dedicated to: “The Middle Ages: the precursor to a well-organised monetary system.”

The medieval period was an epoch of revolutionary discoveries and developments in the history of civilisation and one of the most interesting periods in the post-ancient world, significantly determining the future path of contemporary societies.

The numismatic collection in the Museum of the Bank of Albania includes coins from the medieval epoch, from the period between the 5th and 17th century. These collections are ranked chronologically and constitute part of the history of the monetary system from the Byzantine Empire; Holy Roman Empire, Venetian empire; and Ottoman Empire, as well as coin system collections of the “western world” after the 16th century. These monetary systems circulated and marked the spiritual and folkloric tradition of Albania, which has been bequeathed to the present day. 

In this framework, the purpose of this conference is to further explore the organisation, circulation and production processes of the medieval monetary system. The conference aims to assemble together historical and numismatic researchers, experts in economic and monetary history, young as well as experienced researchers, and employees of coin museums from central banks. Participants will present and discuss the findings of their studies on the organisation, circulation and production process of the medieval monetary system, as well as the importance and role of medieval monetary systems, as precursors of a well-organised monetary system.

The conference will be organised in sessions focusing on various periods from the middle ages to the modern period.
